Youth Academy 2024
At the beginning of April, at the Gateshead Councils Learning Centre, Lucy Zakeri delivered the first Health & Care Youth Academy of 2024, with the support of colleagues Sophie Walters and Jessica Forster.
The Academy is for young learners, aged 13 – 17, in Gateshead, who have an interest in a Career in the Health & Care sector.
Lucy organised for volunteers from different job roles to deliver interactive sessions and talk about their role and career path.
The following volunteers attended: Pharmacist, Pharmacist technician, Midwife, Paramedics, Healthcare Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Red cross First aid, Tissue technical specialist, PEG Nurse, and Young people’s Mental health worker.
Young Responders from St Johns Ambulance also delivered a session around knife crime with the support of the MELISSA Bus and their fantastic simulation mannequin. This highlighted the affects of knife crime as well as first aid skills in the event of a stabbing.
The learners were able to gain an insight into the different roles within the Health & Care Sector, whilst taking part in interactive sessions and exciting group work throughout the week.
Following the Academy, 100% of the learners said they had a better understanding of the Health & Care sector, 100% said that they would recommend the Academy to their friends and 80% of the learners said that the Academy influenced their career path.
When asked to summarise their experience the learners left some lovely comments such as, ‘Brilliant, supportive and helpful experience’, ‘An amazing experience’ , ‘Exciting, fun and interesting’, ‘really interactive and interesting, great knowledge learned’.
We look forward to delivering the second week in August, with even more volunteers scheduled to attend!
